The market is hot right now for any sports commentator that can talk intelligently about the things that make fans money. Matthew Berry recently announced his departure from ESPN. He shouldn’t have trouble finding a new home. In fact, Andrew Marchand reports that there is already a frontrunner.
NBC has emerged as a favorite to add Berry. Marchand writes that there is no formal agreement as of yet and the network declined to comment.
Adding Berry would increase the amount of fantasy content NBC could offer. That would likely be used to boost subscriptions to Peacock, which as made a major commitment to sports since its launch.
Matthew Berry would also fit on Football Night in America. If he were to sign with NBC, it would make sense to use him on the network’s pregame show for Sunday Night Football.
Berry was at the center of Fantasy Focus on ESPN2. The show was a routine ratings draw for the network. That audience, combined with his Twitter following, makes him a valuable addition to any network, particularly because audiences have shown the willingness to pay for information about fantasy sports and gambling.
