According to Andrew Zarian, who covers pro wrestling for The Wrestling Observer, the WWE is looking heavily into adjusting their content to suit an older audience.
According to a tweet from Zarian, the USA Network, broadcasters of the WWE’s Monday Night Raw, had plans to make the change as early as this Monday. However, Zarian says the memo was sent out “prematurely” and the date for the switch “was not finalized”.
WWE programming has been rated PG since 2008 after being rated TV-14 from 1997-2008. The move at the time was considered to be part of an effort to make a more family-friendly product and also becoming more palpable to some advertisers.
It is still not known if and when this switch may happen, but if it is delayed, it could be in part due to the lack of clarity of what the status of company owner Vince McMahon will ultimately be. McMahon has reportedly paid four women over $12 million on “hush money” to suppress details of infidelity and sexual misconduct by the owner.
