In the early hours on Monday morning, the state of Massachusetts negotiated a sports betting bill that would legalize sports betting in the state. The agreement from the state’s Sports Betting Conference Committee was voted on just before 5 am Eastern Time and that meant the morning radio shows in Boston got to be the very first to react.
Toucher and Rich on 98.5 the Sports Hub opened their show with a breaking news sound effect and two co-hosts gave the details which would have been a surprise to many who went to bed assuming their would be no approved legislation.
“We are starting the Toucher and Rich radio program with a little breaking sports news,” began Fred Toucher. “The Mass legislative session was still going strong at five o’clock in the morning and they decided something that will affect a great deal of our audience.”
Yup, legal sports betting is coming to Massachusetts,” replied Rich Shertenlieb. “On top of all that, no limit on where they can advertise,” he shared gleefully.
Shertenlieb added, “this is real. It looks like in the next couple of weeks… you’ll be able to sit down and finally be able to gamble on sports. Thank God.”
Later, Toucher said he was pleased because this all means more revenue for the state.
“There will be white-collar jobs that come out of this too… these companies are going to increase their boots on the ground marketing in Massachusetts and they are going to spend a lot more, conceivably on advertising which leads to more jobs. The more you spend on something the more jobs are created, there are a lot of things that are positive about it.”
