Since Rachel Maddow transitioned her show to a weekly format to Mondays only, MSNBC had used various guests to fill the Tuesday through Friday hole but recently found the long-term replacement in Alex Wagner.
Ahead of Wagner’s launch date this month, the network has provided more information, per TV Newser, about the show’s name, which will occupy Maddow’s time slot. “Alex Wagner Tonight” will premiere Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 9 PM ET, airing Tuesday-Friday.
“This is not a show where our hair is on fire, and we’re yelling past each other, and we’re creating these manufactured moments of tension,” MSNBC President Rashida Jones said regarding the show’s format under Wagner in a June interview with The New York Times.
“I really want the takeaway from this show to be a better understanding of what’s happening in the world.”
In February, Wagner rejoined MSNBC as a political analyst and guest host in primetime. She mostly filled in for Maddow and occasionally for Chris Hayes. Furthermore, with her new program on the network, Wagner becomes the only Asian American to host a primetime cable news show.
