NBC News Union Slams ‘Return to Office’ Policy

210 members of the NBC News Union signed a letter slamming the company’s management after alleging return-to-office policy was put in place, and several remote employees were fired.

The letter says NBC used a “pressure campaign” to force a plan that wasn’t negotiated to force employees to return to the office. NBC News Guild said the company has refused to “answer basic questions about the plan, creating unnecessary confusion and anxiety”.

The letter goes on to blast the firing of several employees, which the Guild alleges happened “for no reason other than their geographic location”, saying NBC management would rather “lose good workers who happen to live in another city than embrace the reality of a hybrid workplace or live up to their own repeated commitments to address concerns”.

An NBC spokesman told Mediaite the company remains “committed to a flexible and hybrid workplace” noting “there is not, and has never been, a five-day return-to-office mandate”.

Several other media outlets have pushed back dates for their staff to return to offices. In May, The New York Times paused a return to office strategy after COVID cases surged in the city.
