Not every kicker gets the experience of making a game-winning field goal, let alone in the very first game of their NFL career. Even fewer, maybe no one, gets an entire radio station named after them. That is what the Cleveland Browns’ Cade York is experiencing today.
With just eight seconds left in the game, the rookie out of LSU hit a field goal from 58 yards out in Week 1 in Charlotte. The kick was the difference in the Browns’ 26-24 win over the Carolina Panthers.
ESPN Cleveland is celebrating by re-branding. For Monday only, the station will be known as ESPN Cade York.
Sunday wasn’t just about one big kick for the rookie. York delivered on every kick he was asked to make, going 4/4 on field goal tries and 2/2 on extra points.
A tweet from Sunday shows that originally the idea was to simply change the profile pictureon the station’s Twitter account. Obviously, it got a little bit bigger.
ESPN Cade York PD Matt Fishman says the station has already added imaging to mark the occasion. That includes the radio call of the kick, which Fishman says will be played “like crazy.”
The Really Big Show will celebrate a Victory Monday in Charlotte. The show airs from 9 am until 1 pm.
“The Browns drafted Cade York in the fourth round for a reason. This was the reason,” Fishman told BSM. “Today, we celebrate his game-winning kick that gave the Browns their first win in an opener since 2004.”
Does Cade York know about the honor?
“He does not know yet at least from us,” he added.
