CNN boss Chris Licht spoke with CNBC to discuss his plans for the network as he enters six months on the job. Licht hasn’t been afraid to make changes since coming on board.
But if you thought CNN was done with layoffs, guess again. More changes are expected at the cable news channel, and not in a positive way.
In an article by Alex Sherman, Licht is handed authorization from Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav to transform CNN, which the network boss is internally referring to as a “right-sizing” of the business.
Sherman writes that most of Licht’s job cuts are still to come this year, according to those close to the situation who asked not to be identified.
Zaslav has reportedly told division heads throughout the cable news channel to reconsider their departments and find ways to cut expenses.
CNN isn’t alone in seeing job cuts. A source close to the matter told the CNBC reporter that Warner Bros. Discovery will lay off more than 1,000 people before the end of 2022.
Licht doesn’t have a precise order to cut a specific number of jobs or save a particular share of spending. But he’s preparing to cut parts of CNN that have become inflated over time according to the report.
The CNN boss has already begun the process as several people from the network’s audio department were recently let go.
