Seattle Mariners television play-by-play announcer Dave Sims was a guest on Carton & Roberts Thursday, and the former WFAN host shared how his famous “Hey now!” call originated.
Sims call of “Hey now!” rose to prominence during this baseball season as the Seattle Mariners made the playoffs for the first time since 2001.
“Is there a standard home run call you do for just like a run of the mill 4th inning solo shot?,” Carton asked.
“I just describe it,” Sims said. “Now when Cal Raleigh hits the home run against Oakland to get us into the playoffs? ‘There’s a drive, deep to right, the Mariners are gonna win this ballgame 2-1. The dream lives! The drought is over! They’re going to the playoffs! Hey now! Hey now!'”
Carton then asked if Sims prefers organic or prepared calls.
“Organic, because I love the work of Mr. Frank Sinatra, and there’s a song where he ends it with ‘Hey now’, and then ‘Love’,” Sims replied. “And then of course on Gary Shandling’s show, the Hank Kingsley character would say ‘Hey now! Here’s Gary Shandling’. I loved that, I tried it out, and it worked.”
