NBC News suspended Emmy award-winning reporter Miguel Almaguer after the network retracted a story he reported involving Paul Pelosi. The husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was allegedly attacked by a man wielding a hammer in his San Francisco residence.
According to The New York Post, Almaguer was suspended for his erroneous report which stated that Pelosi didn’t declare a “state of emergency” or try to leave but instead walked back to his attacker when police arrived.
Nationally syndicated radio hosts Howie Carr and Grace Curley raised questions Tuesday about the timing of Almaguer’s suspension.
“How many people OK’d that story by the way?” Carr said. “That wasn’t on the local NBC affiliate, that was on the network. How many producers and news editors had to sign off on that before it went on the air?”
Curley stated that certain journalists that have covered Paul Pelosi have rushed to report things that have later been retracted or refuted.
“Here’s a note to other journalists, if you’re that worried about misinformation or disinformation, then make sure your story is right before you publish it,” she said.
Curley added that some journalists like to fact-check people despite the inaccuracies of their own reporting.
“I don’t think that that NBC reporter made this story up,” Carr said. “I don’t think he would’ve taken a chance like that. Somebody he trusted told him that.”
