1,100 New York Times employees walked out Thursday during a protest over labor negotiations between The New York Times Guild and the venerable publication.
The Guild’s social media outlets claimed the paper “walked away from the table with five hours to go” during the most recent negotiations.
Joe Kahn, Executive Editor of The Times, shared that the paper is working towards a resolution.
“Strikes typically happen when talks deadlock. That is not where we are today,” he said. “While the company and the NewsGuild remain apart on a number of issues, we continue to trade proposals and make progress toward an agreement.”
The Guild has asked for a minimum salary of $65,000 for its employees during the nearly 20-month negotiation. Several Times journalists tweet their support for the walkout, with one calling it “an investment in the future” of the paper.
Times reporters have asked readers not to cross “the digital picket line” and support the strike.
