KIRO Honors Life and Memory of Dori Monson

KIRO Newsradio’s John Curley spent nearly the entire day remembering Dori Monson, who died on New Years Eve after suffering what the station called a “cardiac event”.

The station has compressed the broadcast into one podcast that is more than five hours in length.

Curley — KIRO’s afternoon host — welcomed several past and current colleagues to the memorial show, including Spike O’Neill, Todd Herman, Jason Rantz, Bryan Suits, Michael Medved, and Don O’Neill.

“He always made me better at what I was doing because I always knew that he was going to snatch something up if I didn’t get it first,” Rantz said. “I always appreciated that motivation he provided but also the friendship and guidance that he provided.”

Monson also worked as the pre-game and post-game host of the Seattle Seahawks radio broadcasts, so Curley also welcomed Seattle sports figures Brock Huard, Tony Ventrella, Dave Wyman, and Bob Rivers, as well as outdoorsman Tom Nelson.

Curley fondly remembered Monson’s competitive drive throughout the broadcast, mentioning that if the longtime Seattle radio host thought he could best someone at any given topic, feat, or skill, he would take the opportunity to dedicate himself to the craft. Curley added that competitive drive was part of the reason for his sustained radio success.
