The national championship game could not match the Fiesta Bowl and the Peach Bowl. That was true of both viewership and excitement. Georgia’s blowout victory against TCU drew an average of 17.2 million viewers across ESPN networks.
The Bulldogs won their second consecutive national title thanks to a 65-7 demolition of the Horned Frogs. That likely accounts for the fall-off in audience from the semi-finals. The Fiesta Bowl averaged 21.4 million viewers. The Peach Bowl drew an average audience of 22.1 million.
ESPN has plenty to be happy about when it comes to the entire College Football Playoff. The entire three game event averaged 20.6 million viewers. That is up 9% from last season, when the final featured two SEC games.
