News/Talk/Sports WSJS is off the air on a third signal after another one of its towers was vandalized.
Last week, station owner Stu Epperson Jr. claimed that the company had been the victim of vandals tearing down two of the station’s five towers, calling it “one of the toughest days of my broadcasting life”.
Now, a third tower has been toyed with, and the company’s COO is looking for answers.
“It doesn’t seem like kids out vandalizing, because there’s some very specific tools that you have to use to make that kind of a cut,” COO of Truth Broadcasting Michael Carbone told WXII-TV.
Carbone said he believed the first tower issue was a result of bad weather, but when the second tower was affected, he knew something bigger was at play. He then added the company hired security to monitor the tower sites, but once security left, the third tower was damaged.
“The person who did this had a real good idea of what they were doing,” Carbone said. “Because they picked the point that was the safest to do what they were going to do.”
Winston-Salem Police are still investigating the incidents, with an FBI spokesperson telling WXII-TV that it is willing and prepared to investigate if required.
It is unclear which signal was the third tower vandalized. Previously, the station’s main signal at 600 AM, followed by the 101.5 FM tower — both licensed to Winston-Salem — had been toppled. The station also broadcasts on 103.1 FM in Winston-Salem, 93.7 FM in Greensboro, and 104.9 FM in High Point.
