Boston Celtics television voice Mike Gorman was curiously donning an eye patch during a recent broadcast, and he has now explained the situation that led to it being necessary.
During an appearance on Toucher & Rich Wednesday, Gorman explained he recently had a health scare related to his eyesight.
“They tested me for about two or three hours. They decided I didn’t have a stroke, which is good, but I did have a detached retina,” Gorman explained. “I had to be operated on within 48 hours, or I could’ve lost my eyesight forever. I was in the emergency room Saturday night and was being operated on Monday morning.”
Gorman said both of his eyes have now been dilated for a week, and the eye patch is necessary for light sensitivity, and joked about all the rumors he’s heard.
“With all the Internet speculation, people said I was trying to look like Johnny Depp [in Pirates of the Caribbean]. You know, just crazy stuff. So that’s what’s going on there, folks, if anybody cares. Everything is going to work out, though.
“[Doctors] said it takes about two or three months before vision returns. Each morning I wake up, it’s a little better. I wouldn’t be able to pick you guys out of a crowd because everything is all colors. But there weren’t colors before. It was just a black curtain.”
The medical issue for Gorman comes after he began scaling back his schedule for the 2022-2023 season, calling only home games and games in New York and Philadelphia. The 77-year-old has been the television voice of the club since 1981.
