Tom Glavine Returning To Braves TV Crew in 2023

Broadcasts of Atlanta Braves games for Bally Sports South and Southeast will sound a bit different this season with Brandon Gaudin taking over play-by-play duties. But fans tuning in will also see and hear from a welcomed sight in the booth in Hall of Fame pitcher and Braves legend Tom Glavine.

Glavine has been calling Braves games on TV since 2010. He took 2022 off to spend more time with his mother, Mildred. Glavine’s mom passed away in December at the age of 86.

“I’m looking forward to getting back into it. Taking the year off certainly was the right thing for me to do at that time,” Glavine said in Justin Toscano’s profile of Glavine for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “But I enjoy being around the game and being a part of it, so I’m excited about it.”

Glavine talked about parting ways with longtime broadcast partner Chip Caray, who was hired as the new play-by-play voice of the St. Louis Cardinals.

“For whatever views people have of him, and I know they’re varying, (but) I think for the most part, though, people enjoyed listening to him,” Glavine said of Caray. “From my standpoint, he was so great to work with. He did such a good job of, for me anyway, teeing me up for things to talk about. And that’s not always easy.”

“I think Chip had a healthy respect for what he brought to the table, but also what me or (analyst Jeff Francoeur) bring to the table as guys who played the game,” Glavine added. “He freely admitted he never played the game, so he doesn’t understand some things, so he relied on us for a lot of those things.”

Glavine anticipates being alongside Gaudin for 35-40 games. He said he’s excited to work with someone who is passionate about the Braves.

“Once it was apparent Chip wasn’t coming back, I knew there’d be no shortage of people to choose from. To choose him, and a Braves fan, it’s gonna be great,” Glavine said. “I’ve talked to a few people about him – nothing but good things to say, and (they say he’s) easy to work with.”
