Florida Atlantic University is headed to Houston to play San Diego State in the Final Four, and the call of the historic moment on the FAU Radio Network was almost never heard due to a technical issue at Madison Square Garden.
With 18.6 seconds left in the East Regional final, Kevin LaVicka’s internet connection to his Comrex went out.
LaVicka told Andy Katz after the game that he had a mad scramble to get a working ethernet cable connected to his Comrex.
“It was getting a little rough. My life’s dream is crumbling before me,” LaVicka said.
LaVicka credited a Kansas State layup and timeout for buying enough time to look for another cable and his ESPN West Palm colleague by his side for holding the Comrex up long enough to keep the feed going so he could make the call of the final play that sent the Owls to the Final Four.
