King Charles With Charles Barkley and Gayle King Coming To CNN

CNN will launch a new show called King Charles, co-hosted by Charles Barkley and Gayle King. CNN President Chris Licht announced the plans for the show after several months of speculation, citing it as a means for the network to provide culturally relevant content to its viewers.

During TNT’s “NBA Tip-Off” show on Saturday, Barkley and King discussed the opportunity.

“What I think is so great for the both of us is that its live TV,” said King. “To me, live TV is like working without a net. So, whatever happens, happens. I like to have a little bit of a script. When Charlie and I are on TV, I think we are both very curious. I wasn’t looking for another job.”

According to Barkley, when CNN initially approached him about hosting a show, they suggested King as a potential co-host.

“I said I will work with Gayle, and we called each other. We had a great conversation, and that’s how the whole thing came about,” he added. “We don’t want to say we are a liberal or a conservative, Republican or a Democrat, and that’s one of the things that has already ruined television in general. I know she is going to be a straight shooter, and I know I am going to be a straight shooter.”

Barkley mentioned that he had had disagreements with King regarding specific topics, which they believe will make for compelling discussions on their show. He also stated that they wouldn’t rely on sensationalized issues to attract viewers and would avoid using “clickbait” tactics.

“That’s what drives me crazy about people in our profession right now. You know she is going to be fair and honest, and you know I am going to do the same thing,” Barley said.

King expressed that she shares Barkley’s sentiments regarding the absence of sensationalism that audiences can anticipate from the new program.

“I like that it’s no holds barred, and I am very aware of people are watching,” King said. “I don’t think that I can just go on and say anything. Decorum and courtesy, and kindness always work. Everybody I know has an opinion about something, and we have to find a way to have a good conversation without tearing each other down, and we can do that.”

Chris Licht, the President of CNN, expressed his excitement in announcing the show and said he believes the pair will offer a distinct perspective.

“I am thrilled to share that CNN will be home to a new show featuring the extraordinary duo of Gayle King and Charles Barkley, aptly titled King Charles, which will air weekly in primetime beginning this fall and running into 2024,” the statement read. “This show will be an exciting new way we deliver culturally relevant programming and unique perspectives to our audience from two incredibly dynamic personalities. We are excited that they are both able to join us in addition to their current respective roles, with Gayle continuing to anchor CBS Mornings. King Charles exemplifies the one-team, one-company mentality with Charles playing double duty at CNN and in his role at WBD Sports.”
