Being mentioned in a rap song sometimes isn’t a good thing, but for Paul Finebaum, he was surprised and honored to know he got a shout out from Lil Wayne on a new album out last week.
Wayne mentions Finebaum by name in a verse on the track “This Shit Right Here.”
“I’m tryna talk to ’em like Paul Finebaum, I bring the chalk to ’em, get that boy outlined,” Wayne raps.
Finebaum told BSM’s Demetri Ravanos over the weekend that getting mentioned was pretty surprising.
“Obviously, you do great work and hope that somebody notices,” he said. “A lot of times, most of the time, nobody does, then the most unforgettable thing happens.”
Paul said he heard about it through his producer.
“Somebody sent me a note,” he said. “They said hearing Paul Finebaum in a Lil Wayne song was not on their bingo card that day.”
Considering Lil Wayne is from New Orleans and roots for LSU, and also considering SEC country does consist of some hotbeds for the rap and hip-hop world, Finebaum said it was kind of surprising that this was the first instance of his name and profession being worked into a song.
But Paul added that he is often surprised to meet famous people from time to time who know of him and his radio show.
“Before Covid, I was in New York a couple of days a week for things like First Take and Stephen A’s show,” he said. “I would meet actors, comedians, singers, and I was always surprised that they had a clue. But then again, when you’re doing that show, it crosses so many boundaries.”
Finebaum and his callers had some fun with the shout out on his radio program The Paul Finebaum Show on Friday. Admittedly, though, Paul said some of his fans likely aren’t fans of Lil Wayne.
“The callers were interesting (Friday) because they were having fun with it,” he said. “A lot of them were probably Googling Lil Wayne while they were making a phone call.”
