It’s not often that you get to work with family in the sports media business, but Kyle Long gets to work with his brother Chris when he appears on Chris’s Green Light podcast. While the brothers are different people, they have a lot of fun working together.
Kyle was a guest on the GoJo podcast with Mike Golic Jr. and Brandon Newman this week and he said while he is learning to adjust to the way Chris runs the show, they end up having a lot of laughs when they are on the show together every week.
“My executive functions aren’t as honed as his. He’s really well-versed in being a head of a charity, a captain on a football team. Chris was a captain, he was the number two pick, he was the face of UVA (Virginia) when he was there. These are things that I never was.
“Chris runs Green Light. He runs the deal. He’s got a process and I’m learning to adjust to it. We have so much fun and we are growing together on Green Light. Every time I go on there, I leave and I’m like ‘Was that the hardest we’ve laughed?’ He said ‘Yeah, I’ll see you next week’. It will be great. I enjoy doing it with him, we are a lot different.”
One of the things that Kyle appreciates about Chris is that while they can have fun together, Chris is able to talk about things with him from a business perspective as well.
“We go to Montana every summer and I remember Chris pulled me aside and he was wearing a hat he had never worn before. He was my boss in that conversation. It makes it clear that I have to put on a different hat here, too. We are cosplaying as businessmen. I am glad that we have a relationship such that he can talk to me in that way and be honest with me.
“Then, the veil is lifted when we are in the studio and it’s unfiltered Chris, unfiltered me. You see us have disagreements on air, we talk over each other. It’s real. That’s the cool thing.”
Kyle mentioned that one of the things he wants to emulate from his brother is how Chris prepares for the show and how much film that he watches before recording his show.
“You learn a lot about people when you work with them…You can learn a lot from working with somebody on a podcast. I realized that Chris is way, way, way more prepared than I am. He watches way more football than I do. He really grinds film and it’s something I need to work on. That became more obvious working in studio with him.”
