Duane Kuiper: ‘I Don’t Think it Would be Appropriate’ To Discuss Glen Kuiper Suspension

Following his use of a racial slur while on the air Saturday in discussing his visit to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, Oakland Athletics play-by-play announcer Glen Kuiper was suspended indefinitely from calling games. Color commentator Dallas Braden will work alongside a rotation of Vince Controneo and Johnny Doskow for the time being.

Across the Bay, San Francisco Giants announcer and Glen’s brother Duane has watched the situation unfold from afar and felt the effects. On Tuesday, he appeared with Murph & Mac on KNBR for his weekly spot. Before beginning the discussion of the Giants though, the show offered Kuiper an opportunity to make a statement on the situation.

“[We] just wanted to give you a chance just to make any statement you wanted to make on your brother, Glen,” said show co-host Brian Murphy. “We can address it briefly and move on; anything that you wanted to say or not.”

“It’s really a delicate and stressful time for Glen,” Kuiper replied. “It trickles down to every member of your family. I just don’t think it would be appropriate for me to talk about it or discuss it at this time, but there will come a time when I’d be more than happy to talk about it.”

“Seems like a fair enough discussion, and we will move it down the road,” Murphy said.

Duane Kuiper has been regularly calling the team’s games since 1994 after a stint with the organization in the broadcast booth from 1986 to 1992. His brother Glen has been the television voice of the rival Athletics since 2006 after working as an on-field correspondent beginning in 2004.
