If you are a college football fan, you know The Paul Finebaum Show is the best place to hear your passion reflected back to you and then some. Finebaum took to Twitter on Thursday morning to announce one of his most famous callers had passed away.
Phyllis Chapple-Perkins, better known to listeners as “Phyllis in Mulga,” was a devoted Alabama fan. Her calls usually included shouting at Finebaum or guests about perceived disrespect towards the Crimson Tide or Nick Saban.
Her most famous call came in October of 2014. Colin Cowherd joined Finebaum to promote his new book. During the appearance, which took place shortly after Alabama had lost to Ole Miss, Cowherd said he thought Nick Saban’s dynasty at Alabama was coming to an end.
Phyllis called in during the next segment to say that from now on, she would only refer to the now-FOX Sports Radio host as “Cow Turd” and then uttered what has become an iconic line, “You outta your freakin’ mind, Cow Turd!”.
Any time he is given the chance, Paul Finebaum will happily talk about his connection with his callers. Last year, he told Jason Barrett that he has accepted invitations to speak at funerals for multiple people whom he had never met beyond their regular phone calls. It is likely safe to assume that he will be getting an invitation to do that for Phyllis Chapple-Perkins once plans are finalized.
The college football media certainly felt the pain of losing Phyllis in Mulga. Many of them responded to Finebaum’s announcement to express condolences and sadness.
