John Berman: People Have Been Saying Cable News is Dying Since 1995

With upheaval at both Fox News and CNN seemingly daily, questions abound about the future of cable news. CNN News Central anchor John Berman believes the future is still bright.

During an appearance on Mediaite’s The Interview podcast, Berman said that while there is certainly a transformation going on in the news space, it will still be a needed resource for daily consumers.

“Everything is so everything is changing so much. Everything is in such flux and there’s such upheaval,” Berman said. “But the one thing that doesn’t change is there is news and there will always be news.”

Many have decried the end of days for both CNN and Fox News after high-profile exits and charges of partisanship from each side of the political aisle. However, Berman shared that’s been a popular refrain in his experience.

“When I started in the business in 1995, applying for desk assistant jobs, I remember people telling me that the industry was dying. I’m not joking. I remember people saying ‘You don’t want to get into this’. That was 1995. People have been declaring the end of the news business for decades now,” he explained. “There will always be news. People will always need to report on it and always need to tell the stories. Given that, I think CNN is the best positioned to ride out this period of tumult that absolutely is in the industry right now.”

Berman serves as anchor of CNN News Central — alongside Kate Bolduan and Sara Sidner — from the network’s New York studios from 9:00 AM-Noon. The program launched last month and he shared he believes things have gotten off to a smashing success.

“I think the audience has responded well. I think it’s been a blast to do,” Berman admitted.
