Next Media Rights Deal Could Push College Football Playoff Revenue Over $2 Billion

The College Football Playoff will expand to 12 teams next season, and that expansion is expected to mean a significant revenue increase when the next media rights deal is hashed out.

The current CFP contract with ESPN doesn’t end until 2026. Front Office Sports cited a Knight Commission report that indicated revenue to conferences will jump by more than $1.4 billion.

ESPN’s current deal pays around $470 million each year. It’s believed that figure will be worth close to $2.2 billion when the new contract goes into effect.

The expanded field of teams will bring playoff games to college campuses for the first time. And there could be a need to distribute games across several networks when the time comes.
