Bomani Jones opened up on Wednesday night about the cancellation of his HBO series Game Theory.
In an episode of his podcast The Evening Jones, Bomani said he knew two months ago that the series was done. But even though it was a business decision, Jones said he got to accomplish something he always set out to do.
“Do you realize how bananas it is that for two seasons I got to do a TV show on HBO the way that I wanted to do a TV show on HBO?” Jones said. “Do you understand the rarified air that that is in?”
“We got to ‘stuff you dream of’ level,” he added.
Jones went on to add that while people in sports media will have plenty to say about why they think the show only lasted two seasons, he is not ashamed of the final product that was presented. He saw immense growth in the show over the last two years.
“All I can tell you is how good the show itself was and how the show got better,” he said. “I could look at episode one of the first season and compare it to episode ten of the last season and man, the show just got a whole lot better.”
“We did a show that I think is really good,” Bomani added. “And we did a show that I am personally prouder of than anything that I have ever done professionally.”
Bomani continued to hammer home the point that if there was something at the top of his career list he wanted to do, it was to have an HBO show. The fact that he was able to accomplish that was a testament to how hard he’s worked over the last two decades.
“I’m at the point of my life/career where I just wanted to do something that was dope. And I did, and I’m glad that I did,” Bomani. “And so there’s not really much need to make these larger, grander hypotheses about what happened.”
As for specific details about how the decision to cancel the series was made, Bomani said he didn’t feel comfortable talking about it. But he noted that there’s a lot of speculation that people are running with.
“Most of you really don’t have any idea what it is that you’re talking about,” he said.
