Plenty has been made about the way gambling has infiltrated real sports, but what about fantasy sports? Laurence Holmes thinks being able to bet on games has made the people of Illinois less likely to play fantasy sports.
“I just have no energy for fantasy football anymore,” he said Tuesday on 670 The Score. “I would rather be on FanDuel betting the NFL, then being in a fantasy league, like worrying about losing a game by a tenth of a point.”
Betting directly on games has been more satisfying for Holmes. He said it is easy to see how sports betting apps could replace fantasy for so many people, because the gratification of a win is instant.
“I’ve had a good time playing fantasy football. I’m not saying that. I just know for now, it doesn’t matter to me. How about the feeling of winning money immediately and it already being in your account and you not having to worry about someone not paying their fees or you not getting your money at the end of a season?”
He admitted that the last fantasy football league he was a part of was years ago with his Score colleagues. Illinois legalized sports betting in 2019, so maybe the two are tied together.
