It’s been smooth sailing for YouTube TV after acquiring the rights to NFL Sunday Ticket. The streaming service was the only major pay TV provider to have a net subscriber gain in Q2 2023 according to reports.
Major pay TV providers include cable and satellite companies as well as streaming services like YouTubeTV and DirecTV stream that require a subscription to watch live TV. Research from Leichtman Research Group estimates that the entire industry lost more than 1.73 million subscribers in the quarter.
YouTube added an estimated 200,000 subscriptions during that time frame. Competitors like DirecTV (-400,000), Comcast (-543,000), Spectrum (-200,000) and Dish (-197,000) all had net losses in subscribers.
YouTube started ramping up its marketing of NFL Sunday Ticket in the spring and is currently offering a $50 discount at sign-up.
