The 2023 college football season doesn’t kick off until the end of this week, but some people are already thinking about the 2024 season.
Lost amongst the chatter about conference realignment and media rights deals for the NBA is the fact that the College Football Playoff expands to twelve teams next season. While the final seven games belong to ESPN, the rights to the four first round games are up for grabs.
Ryan Glasspiegel of The New York Post has spoken with sources at multiple networks. The consensus is that the cost for anyone to secure the media rights for the first four games will not be small.
The sources told Glasspiegel that they have already been quoted initial prices not only to carry the first round games in 2024 and 2025, but to join the broadcast consortium for future College Football Playoffs. The asking price was described as “exorbitant.”
Glasspiegel did not mention which networks he has spoken with. FOX has been vocal in the past about its desire to acquire some TV rights to the event.
A lot is still up in the air when it comes to the future of the College Football Playoff. The committee is meeting at the end of the month to discuss what the major shift in the Pac-12 means for revenue and playoff bids moving forward.
