There’s a reason why the NFL tries to put the Dallas Cowboys in a prime national TV window each week during the regular season, and NBC’s Cris Collinsworth recognizes that.
Collinsworth told Dan Patrick on Monday that NBC loves airing the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football because of the fact that they usually bring in massive audiences. Whether Dallas is good each year is irrelevant.
“Historically it was, they were really great for a decade and then they really weren’t for a long time. And yet if NBC had their choice, we would do 17 Dallas Cowboys games,” he said. “It doesn’t even matter what the record is.”
Even in recent years when quarterback Dak Prescott has been injured and the team’s been in a hole, people still tune in. Collinsworth said the team could be undefeated or be the worst team in the league, people will watch.
“It’s insanity, but it’s true,” he said. “They draw the ratings, they get it done.”
And just like the fans, Collinsworth said NBC will still clamor for the Cowboys if they have the chance, especially for Week 1.
“Every opening night we want the Dallas Cowboys if we can get them,” Collinsworth said.
