CNN has promoted Alex Marquardt to the role of Chief National Security Correspondent. He will be based in the network’s Washington D.C. bureau.
Marquardt has spent nearly 15 years covering Russia, Ukraine, and national security in Washington D.C. for the network. He originally joined CNN in 2008 as an embed reporter during to 2008 Presidential election covering both then-Senators Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
He later joined ABC News where he was based in Moscow, Jerusalem, Beirut, and London, covering political and civil unrest in the Middle East.
He returned to CNN in 2017 as a senior national security correspondent, covering the war in Ukraine, the January 6th Insurrection, and Black Lives Matter protests.
In addition to his work as a national security correspondent, Marquardt has served as a fill-in host for Wolf Blitzer on The Situation Room.
