MSG Networks has announced the launch of MSG+, a direct-to-consumer option for New York sports fans to watch their favorite teams wherever they are. The product gives fans the ability to purchase different types of subscriptions to access live game contests and other programming from the regional sports network.
For $29.99 a month or $309.99 each year, viewers will be able to watch the New York Knicks, New York Rangers, New York Islanders, New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres from wherever they are, along with other contests and content from MSG Network and MSG SportsNet. Users can also watch replays of the game broadcast, along with highlights and pre/post-game commentary for 72 hours following the start of a contest. The platform is available on several devices and platforms, including Apple TV, Android, iOS and on the web, and there are more devices expected to be announced in the future.
A key factor of differentiation in the MSG+ service, which tabbed Bayer and the Aleve brand at Bayer to serve as its presenting sponsor, comes through the single-game purchase functionality. For $9.99, MSG Networks viewers will be able to watch a singular game of their choosing, the particular sport or team notwithstanding. Viewers who are subscribed to a pay television service that is in a carriage agreement with MSG Networks will have free access to the service using their eligible provider login.
“This is an exciting time for MSG Networks and fans of our teams,” Andrea Greenberg, MSG Networks president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. “MSG+ is a game-changer for fans who do not subscribe to a traditional, bundled pay television subscription and a win for our subscribers of participating traditional distribution partners who will have free access to this robust streaming service.”
MSG Networks begins its broadcast of preseason hockey when the New York Rangers face the Boston Bruins on September 24. The Knicks will return to the network on October 9 when they face the Boston Celtics in preseason basketball action. The 2023-24 regular season marks the network’s 54th anniversary on the air, serving as the inspiration for other regional sports networks (RSNs)to launch across the United States. MSG Networks was the first RSN to regularly provide high-definition sports coverage, and while that is more than likely on the new MSG+ streaming service, it is unknown whether or not 4K functionality will be offered as well.
