NASCAR Not Close on New Television Rights Deals

NASCAR has repeatedly given updates on when it could announce new television rights deals. Now, even privately, the organization is hesitant to give an update.

According to a report from Sports Business Journal’s John Ourand, while negotiations for the next television package are “going smoothly” no timetable has been set for when they will be completed.

Ourand claims both current rights holders — FOX and NBC — have told NASCAR they are interested in renewing at a slightly higher price than what they currently pay. However, the exclusive negotiating window between NASCAR and the two outlets expired earlier this year.

Meanwhile, the organization has carved out a new six-race midsummer package and is shopping it to both Amazon and Warner Bros. Discovery.

Previously, the racing group had outlined that an updated deal could be expected in mid-summer, which was then pushed back to Labor Day. Despite the encouraging signs, a new deal does not appear imminent.

The NASCAR Cup Series rights rest with NBC and FOX until the end of the 2024 season. NASCAR’s second-tier series — the Xfinity Series — recently sold its rights to The CW for a reported $115 million per year.
