Wednesday was a day of reckoning of sorts for Chris “Mad Dog” Russo, and MLB Network High Heat co-host Alanna Rizzo added to calls that Russo needs to retire.
Mad Dog proclaimed on his SiriusXM show earlier this week ahead of Games 6 and 7 of the NLCS that if the Arizona Diamondbacks were to overcome a 3-2 series deficit and go to the World Series, he would retire.
Russo later clarified that he was only talking about retiring from radio and not retiring from working in media altogether.
Rizzo said she received a text message from D-Backs manager Torey Lovullo earlier joking that he was looking forward to hearing what Mad Dog’s next title in media would be and where he will end up next after retirement.
“So somebody said he was retiring,” Rizzo said. “Even though you said it’s just the radio, the Arizona Diamondbacks expect somebody else to be sitting in your seat.”
Mad Dog smiled and put on his First Take sunglasses responding he’ll only go away if someone pays to let him retire to the Caribbean.
“If you want to send me to the Caribbean for the rest of my life, I’ll miss the radio and I’ll miss the TV,” he said. “And I’ll miss the daily interaction with sports, but that is not a bad deal.”
After further clarifying he meant he would retire from the radio, Rizzo pressed Mad Dog on if he would actually leave SiriusXM.
“I haven’t decided yet,” Russo responded. “I’m undecided.”
Rizzo continued to rib Russo saying he needed to hold up his end of the bargain.
“Who do you think you are, Tom Brady, that can retire and come back; Rob Gronkowski that can retire and come back; Tony LaRussa that retires and comes back; who do you think you are?” she said. “If you said you were gonna retire, you need to retire.”
