With the next television rights deal still on the horizon for the NBA, a potential partnership between the league and Amazon Prime Video could be brewing.
A report from Front Office Sports suggests the streaming video platform is mulling over a potential package of NBA games to air on Tuesday or Thursday nights when the next TV deal is finalized.
The package would be one similar to the current offering of Thursday Night Football Amazon holds with the NFL.
Last year, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver shared his admiration for the partnership between the NFL and Amazon.
The advantages of joining forces with the streaming video platform are clear for the NBA. The age of the average Thursday Night Football viewer is seven years younger than the average age of other NFL viewers on traditional linear television.
Amazon has previously said it would be “aggressive but rational” while in search of more live sports rights.
“Sports are unique; they are uniquely valuable. Because of that, they’ve also been uniquely expensive,” said Amazon Prime Video sports head Jay Marine. “Having said that, they can do things that other things can’t because it’s a guaranteed audience.”
The NBA is currently in an exclusive negotiating window with its current national TV rights partners, ESPN/ABC and TNT.
