Gregg Giannotti: Stephen A. Smith is ‘Loopy’ While Recording Podcast

Stephen A. Smith has provided sports fans with his opinions, insights and expertise for many years on the airwaves of ESPN, specifically as a featured commentator on the hit morning show, First Take.

For just over a year though, he has paired that program with a podcast through Audacy’s Cadence13 division, titled The Stephen A. Smith Show, where he explicates his point of view on issues that span beyond the realm of sports, including politics, culture, and lifestyle. There have been several instances on the show where Smith answers listeners’ questions, some of which span beyond what people presume would be tolerated on the airwaves of ESPN.

On the most recent edition of his show, Smith was asked by a user on X, formerly known as Twitter, what he thought was the “worst day of the week to be horny.” Rather than passing on the question, Smith answered and provided his opinion, something that the Boomer & Gio morning show decided to talk about on the Friday edition of the program.

As update anchor Jerry Recco was providing information about contests going on in the New York metropolitan area, he described the topic of Smith’s podcast as “sort of out of left field.”

The clip elicited laughter from co-hosts Boomer Esiason and Gregg Giannotti, the latter of whom did an impression of Stephen A. Smith discussing the matter. Smith’s response to the listener’s question has amassed more than 7 million views on X and prompted Giannotti to reveal some insight regarding the podcast itself.

“There’s someone who works here who also works on that podcast who tells me that Stephen A. tends to record this when he has a very long day or a long week, and he’s totally sober – I’m not implying anything,” Giannotti said on WFAN. “He’s loopy when he does this, and he’s tired of talking about sports, and you get some of the best content out of him because he’s tired and just letting it fly.”

Smith’s podcast is scheduled for new episodes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays each week, and is in the process of moving into a studio location that will enable him to once again take live calls on the program.
