Dan Le Batard: ‘Stugotz is Good at Mailing it In’

Monday mornings have long been known as a prime-time moment to divulge commentaries and reactions to football games across various platforms. There are a wide variety of programs available from networks, radio stations and individual personalities alike that keep fans of the sport informed and entertained in a variety of ways. While The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz begins broadcasting at 9 AM ET on weekdays, it is not the first program on the air to begin Monday mornings.

In fact, there are a wide variety of shows that are broadcast and released to the public late Sunday night, expediting the reaction from media personalities and subsequent feedback from the audience.

For example, Shannon Sharpe, Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson and Gilbert Arenas record the Nightcap podcast once the games have concluded and disseminate it shortly thereafter. Moreover, Pardon My Take and The Bill Simmons Podcast frequently distribute episodes late Sunday night about the games that took place. Meadowlark Media generally releases God Bless Football early on Monday morning; however, there was a different circumstance this week that Le Batard discussed to open his program.

“I am told that God Bless Football has not come out yet and now we are getting – and it’s been a while since we’ve got these – Stugotz’s original takes are going to appear here first on this show instead of his property with Billy [Gil], God Bless Football,” Le Batard said. “We are going to get his football-maximum takes.”

Jon “Stugotz” Weiner co-hosts the podcast with the aforementioned Gil, who also serves as a producer on Le Batard’s program. In reaction to what Dan Le Batard said, Weiner expressed how listeners will also hear fresh, original takes from Gil. The remark compelled Gil to reply that it is in the control of on-air personalities as to whether or not they want to repeat the same things. He will not do this, instead conjuring new angles and perspectives to present for each program, along with implementing interviews when needed. The reason for the delay in the new episode of the podcast is that the show had an interview scheduled with Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekler for Monday.

“We’re going to talk to him today [and] we’re going to release it today,” Gil added. “We’re not going to sit on that until Friday; it doesn’t make any sense.”

Le Batard was curious to know if Gil could provide him with some sort of device that would send an alert when Weiner is repeating a take from the God Bless Football podcast on The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz. Unlike Gil, Le Batard insinuated that Weiner has a habit of recycling certain takes that he utilizes across programs on which he appears. Gil believes that the program is fairly safe for today unless it plays its own game of, ‘If the season ended today,’ which is where the broadcasters analyze and prognosticate on the existing playoff picture.

“…Stugotz is good at mailing it in and loves to recycle and re-heat,” Le Batard said, “and [he] told us last week – and I didn’t know this was possible – he just said, ‘Yeah, I’ve just only got so many takes, so I’ve got to repeat some of them. I’ve got to get them out multiple times because I’m out of material basically.’”
