A new study from Syracuse University shows that only 3.4% of American journalists call themselves Republicans.
In an online survey of 1,600 journalists last year, the results showed a dramatic drop from the previous study. In 2013, 7.1% of journalists called themselves Republicans. In the first study in 1971, that figure was 25.7%.
Meanwhile, the portion of journalists calling themselves Democrats has risen from 28.1% to 36.4% since the last study was conducted in 2013.
Those who call themselves independents grew slightly, moving from 50.2% of journalists in 2013 to 51.7% in 2022.
A Gallup poll earlier this year revealed that 58% of Democrats and 29% of Independents have either a “great deal” or “fair amount” of trust in the media. However, only 11% of Republicans responded similarly.
