The NFL saw massive TV ratings during its Christmas Day tripleheader. The league, so far, is insistent it will not play games on the holiday if it falls on Tuesday or Wednesday. 560 WQAM host Joe Rose is a bit skeptical of that idea.
While discussing the topic with Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, Rose pointed to the TV ratings as a reason for why the trend will continue.
“I can’t imagine anything being better than what happened on Christmas with the ratings on those games,” Rose said. “They were even higher than I thought they were going to be, averaging between 28 and 29 million.”
Rose then said Roger Goodell says the league won’t play the games outside of traditional NFL gamedays, which Florio pushed back on by pointing out it was NFL Executive Vice President for Media Distribution Hans Schroeder, not Goodell, who has claimed the league won’t move games to Christmas Day. Florio added that the league remains flexible in its schedule and could reverse course at any time in pursuit of making “maximum money”.
Joe Rose then shared an anecdote about how he spent the holiday and noted that he believes the expectation from the average fan is for the NFL to continue to play on Christmas.
“My in-law’s party started with the first game. They want you to come over at the start of the first game and it ends when the last game is over,” Rose shared. “So make sure you try not to drink too much at one time and then make sure you get through it, because you’re right everything’s around that NFL and the schedule they have.”
