Groundhog Day is coming up Friday. That doesn’t mean 710 WOR host Mark Simone is excited about it, though.
During The Mark Simone Show Monday, the topic came up, which led Simone to share his disdain for the entire ordeal.
“Groundhog Day is Friday. Now, let me point out again, I don’t know why we make such a fuss about Groundhog Day,” he said.
That’s when Mark Simone changed gears, sharing his idea for the only discernable reason the custom still takes place.
“Actually, I do know why. If you’re doing the local news or The Today Show, it kills 10 minutes. You can have the politician show up with the groundhog, and you can do it as a feature story and it kills 10 minutes of your broadcast.
“That’s the only reason we have Groundhog Day. It serves no purpose. The groundhog is supposed to predict six more weeks of winter but the Punxsutawney Phil has a track record of being right only 38% of the time, which means most of the time he’s wrong. So I don’t know why we pay any attention to it.”
