Bob Edwards, Longtime NPR and Morning Edition Host, Dies

Longtime NPR and Morning Edition host Bob Edwards has died at the age of 76, according to social media posts from family members.

Edwards joined NPR in 1974 as a news anchor, before being elevated to co-host of All Things Considered alongside Susan Stamberg. He then shifted to hosting Morning Edition in 1979, spending nearly 25 years as the host before exiting in 2004.

The outlet confirmed the news of Edwards’ death in a statement from outgoing NPR CEO John Lansing Monday afternoon.

“We are saddened to hear that Bob Edwards has passed away,” Lansing said. “Bob Edwards understood the intimate and distinctly personal connection with audiences that distinguishes audio journalism from other mediums, and for decades he was a trusted voice in the lives of millions of public radio listeners.”

A 2004 inductee into the Radio Hall of Fame, Bob Edwards was the recipient of several major awards, including a Peabody Award and a pair of Gabriel Awards from the National Catholic Association of Broadcasters.

After he departed public radio, he moved to SiriusXM and hosted The Bob Edwards Show until 2014. He then began hosting Take on Today, a podcast produced by AARP.

In addition to his illustrious radio career, Edwards was also an accomplished author, penning three books.

No cause of death has been released.
