WGN Radio Renews Chicago Blackhawks

WGN Radio and the Chicago Blackhawks have announced a new three-year contract extension. Announcers John Wiedeman and Troy Murray made the announcement at the start of their broadcast last evening in their game against the St. Louis Blues.

We have got some great news that has just came out that the Blackhawks and WGN have partnered up for an extension for another three years,” said Murray. “We are so excited to move forward with this. We are so excited that John and I are also back in the fold for another three years. Congratulations bud, it’s been a long time we have been working together and we will continue to work together on WGN Radio for another 3 years.”

After thanking several of the people who worked to get the extension done, Murray, who played 15 years in the NHL and 12 with the Blackhawks, said, “We ‘re going to be pumping it out on one of the best stations in the United States, in Chicago. WGN, Blackhawks, another three years.”

“Another three years,” replied Wiedeman who is in his 18th season as the radio voice of the Blackhawks. “Prestigious WGN and happy to have all the great Blackhawk fans aboard.”

Jaime Faulkner, Blackhawks president of business operations told Scott Powers of the Athletic, “Radio is important because John and Troy are important to our fans. They are legends. … So our decision to even stay on radio versus simulcast, which is an option several teams are moving to, was just not an option for us. They’re experts and the best at what they do. They’re the reason why we’re so successful. In addition to the great partnership, they contribute greatly to the success. And so part of the extension of the deal was just as important that we lock them up with an extension as well.”
