New York Times Plans to Move Podcasts, Including The Daily, Behind Paywall

The New York Times has become a major player in the podcast space with The Daily serving as one of the most popular shows in the genre. The company is now looking to capitalize on the show’s success by putting it — along with other shows — behind a paywall.

A report from The Wall Street Journal claims the publisher is making plans to provide only the three most recent episodes of the popular podcast hosted by Michael Barbaro available to non-subscribers.

Additionally, the news outlet would make episodes of its Serial podcast exclusive to subscribers for a period of time. Other programs from The Times include Hard Fork and The Ezra Klein Show, among others. It is unclear if the plan from the newspaper would be to place every show under its umbrella into it’s subscription service or if other shows would continue to be heard for free.

The New York Times plans to continue selling advertisements in its podcasts in spite of the subscription service. In 2023, podcast advertising slowed to $1.9 billion, an uptick of 5% after several consecutive years of double-digit growth according to reports from the IAB.
