After the mid-season retirement of John Sterling, the New York Yankees and WFAN were tasked with quickly filling the replacement schedule. But a surprising name — Craig Carton — has found its way onto the list.
The New York sports talk station announced Monday afternoon that Carton would serve as the radio play-by-play voice for the series scheduled for Friday, August 9th through Sunday, August 11th. He’ll be joined by regular analyst Suzyn Waldman on the WFAN broadcast.
“It is a great honor,” Carton said while making the announcement on Evan & Tiki Monday. “It’s a great privilege.”
Carton said the MLB franchise called him directly to serve in the role.
“The New York Yankees called me and then I confirmed that this wasn’t some kind of prank with WFAN. I have been asked — and this is one of the great asks of my career and my lifetime,” he shared. “This is not a bit. This is not schtick. The Yankees requested it. We had a conversation with the architect and WFAN. They have blessed it. And I have the great honor of a lifetime … It’s really one of the crazier out of left field — pardon the pun — asks, and I said yes in a New York second.”
Craig Carton joins the growing list of those who have stepped into the New York Yankees radio booth after Sterling’s retirement. Justin Shackil, Emmanuel Berbari, Ricki Ricardo, and Brendan Burke as those who have called broadcasts for the venerable franchise this season.
The former WFAN host departed last year to put his sole focus into his morning show on FS1. The announcement that he’ll call a series for the Yankees comes on the heels of the news that he has been elected to the New York State Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame.
