The Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM) has created ad-buying guidelines that many advertisers are sticking to. The Daily Wire has expressed concern over them.
The GARM organization has set up best practices for marketers on how to decide what content is and isn’t appropriate for advertisers. However, arguments have been made that the standards push ad dollars from conservative media enterprises to other outlets.
The Daily Wire is one of those organizations sharing its stance, arguing that the GARM guidelines are hurtful to its bottom line.
“We at The Daily Wire do not oppose rating agencies providing tools and information to advertisers so that they can make informed, targeted advertising placement decisions,” the company claimed in an open letter to advertisers. “We are, however, gravely concerned with how GARM and its leaders have privately wielded their considerable concentration of market power – 90% of all ad spend worth $1 trillion – to target and attempt to bankrupt conservative media like The Daily Wire.”
The company — co-founded by Ben Shapiro and Jeremy Boreing — has called for Congressional investigations into the practices by GARM, calling the organization an “apparent censorship cartel” in the process.
In its standards, GARM urgest advertisers to avoid “dangerous” content, which The Daily Wire argues needlessly includes its digital outlet.
“The application of the subjective elements of GARM’s Brand Safety Floor also frequently leads to conservative media content being erroneously maligned as misinformation, harassment, or even hate speech,” the open letter stated.
