Mark Schlereth: I Only Like Using Stats When It Fits My Narrative

"I only like them when they fit something I like."

Mark Schlereth is a busy man in sports media. Outside of his show on Denver Sports 104.3 The Fan, he also serves as an NFL on FOX analyst. Which means he has access to many statistics. That doesn’t mean he has to use them, though.

During Schlereth and Evans Monday, the former NFL offensive lineman affectionately known as “Stink” joked that he is tired by the constant use of statistics to quantify sports debates.

“Normally, you know I only like statistics when I like them,” Schlereth said. “I only like them when they fit something I like. When it fits my narrative, then I like it.”

Mark Schlereth and Mike Evans were discussing the performance of Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic during Serbia’s men’s basketball loss to the United States during pool play of the 2024 Summer Olympics Sunday. While he was on the court, the teams played to an 81-81 tie. When he wasn’t playing, however, his team was outscored by 26 points.

Mark Schlereth — who was live at Denver Broncos training camp with his morning show partner Monday morning — said “That’s awesome. That’s an amazing stat,” before joking that stats have become overblown.
