The Mightier 1090 to Drop Sports Programming, Per Report

Monte Maria Radio, a Tijuana-based Catholic media ministry will take over the programming of the station which had been being handled by Bill Hagen.

After less than four years in the format, The Mightier 1090 (XEPRS-AM), which covers Tijuana/San Diego, is dropping the sports format and will begin airing Spanish Catholic programming on Thursday, August 1. The news was first reported by En Frecuencia and says that Monte Maria Radio, a Tijuana-based Catholic media ministry will take over the programming of the station which had been being handled by Bill Hagen.

Currently, the ESPN station is airing mostly nationally syndicated programming.

After nearly a year and a half off the air, the station returned as The Mightier 1090 on August 17, 2020, which was during the COVID pandemic.

At the time, Hagen said, “Launching a radio station from scratch, during a pandemic with no ‘live’ sports has been daunting, to say the least, but we made it! I am very proud of the product we are putting on the air.”

The station featured Scott Kaplan in afternoon drive when it came back. Kaplan is now heard weekdays weekday afternoons on ESPN LA.
