Donald Trump made an appearance at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago Wednesday afternoon, and his performance drew reactions from both sides of the political aisle.
Trump sat down for a 34-minute interview moderated by ABC News’ Rachel Scott, Fox News’ Harris Faulkner, and Semafor’s Kadia Goba.
The conversation got off to a rocky start. What was originally supposed to start at 1:00 PM ET didn’t begin until nearly 2:15 PM ET. One report claimed the Trump campaign had balked — at the last minute — about real-time fact-checking the NABJ planned to conduct on the former President’s remarks. Meanwhile, in his opening statements, Trump argued the delay was due to technical difficulties the organization incurred.
In addition to the late start, the first question from Scott was centered upon past comments and conduct of Trump, culminating in asking “Why should black voters trust you after you have used language like that?”
“Well, first of all, I don’t believe I’ve ever been asked a question in such a horrible manner,” the former President responded, drawing simultaneous groans and applause from the crowd. “You don’t even say ‘Hi, how are you?’ Are you with ABC? Because I think they’re a fake news network, terrible network.”
The appearance of Donald Trump at the National Association of Black Journalists convention was a decisive one. Many applauded the former President for “going into enemy territory.” Meanwhile, critics were quick to point out how hostile the previously “spiritual and serene” Republican nominee acted. Many observers were critical of the questions from Scott and Goba, as well.
