Joe Buck: Calling St. Louis Cardinals Game with Chip Caray Gave ‘Little Bit of Closure’ to MLB Broadcasting Career

"I don’t know that I’ll do it again, but there was a little bit of closure there for me after walking away from Fox after 2021.”

Joe Buck sat in with Chip Caray during a St. Louis Cardinals broadcast last week on Bally Sports Midwest, which may have been his final MLB broadcast.

Buck appeared on ESPN Radio’s Carlin vs Joe with Chris Carlin and Joe Fortenbaugh Thursday, and was asked about the experience of joining Caray who’s father Skip and grandfather Harry were legends of the baseball broadcast booth like Buck’s father Jack. He shared that doing the game brought him “closure.”

“It was fun. Chip Caray was amazing to welcome me in, and to be as open as he was. He just kept wanting me to do the play-by-play and I wanted him to do it. But it was a blast to sit there with him and get back in there, and do it locally instead of the national stuff. It was fun. I’m glad I did it,” Buck said. “I don’t know that I’ll do it again, but there was a little bit of closure there for me after walking away from Fox after 2021.”

Since joining ESPN in the Monday Night Football booth alongside longtime partner Troy Aikman, Joe Buck has maintained he is unlikely to call baseball games for the network, or in any capacity, in the future. It is something he has struggled with, mentioning publicly that he misses broadcasting the sport more than he thought he would.

However, it appears as if he is at peace with stepping away from where he got his start.
