The Minnesota Twins radio contract is about to end with 830 WCCO. A report from The Athletic claims that KFAN, along with SKOR North, continue to negotiate for the rights to the MLB franchise. “Common Man” — Dan Cole — shared he was not the source for that report.
During his midday program on the iHeartMedia Twin Cities sports station Tuesday, Cole joked that the report from Aaron Gleeman, who is a somewhat regular guest on his program, did not learn that information from the radio host.
“I wonder who Gleeman’s sources are. Maybe it was me. You know it’s not me, right?” Common Man said with a chuckle as he read the report. “I’m just not that guy.”
He continued by reading a portion of the report that argued KFAN might not be a suitor for the Minnesota Twins because the station might be unwilling to preempt Common Man’s program, and also Dan Barreiro’s show in favor of the club’s broadcasts.
“I don’t think — because of our success — those afternoon games would preempt us,” Dan Cole said. “I’m all for it. I don’t get much
of a chance to play golf. That’s the problem. This wouldn’t give me an opportunity to get out,” he said sarcastically.
One portion of the report that Dan Cole did balk at was the idea from the club that dedicated fans of the club would rather their broadcasts air on AM radio — favoring SKOR North and 830 WCCO — than on the FM band.
“Multiple team sources indicated the decision could come down to the Twins’ willingness to upset a core audience of longtime AM radio devotees unable or unwilling to shift to FM,” the report claimed.
“How could you be unable to go to the FM dial? Can you not turn the dial or press that button? Are these people to the point where they say ‘I’d like to listen to the Twins, but I can’t find the FM dial on my radio’? That’s the most preposterous thing I’ve ever seen in my life.”
Despite all the joking and sarcasm, Dan “Common Man” Cole did say, seriously, that KFAN “would love to have” the Minnesota Twins.
