News Media Reacts to WCBS Newsradio 880 Ceasing Operations as ESPN New York Moves to Audacy Signal

Many observers called the demise of the station the "end of an era", with both current and former employees taking to social media to share their memories of the iconic brand.

Monday morning a shocking announcement came down, revealing that Good Karma Brands and Audacy had agreed to a deal to give ESPN New York placement on the AM signal occupied by WCBS Newsradio 880.

The iconic New York all-news radio brand will cease operations on Monday, August 26th, as ESPN New York abandons its 98.7 FM signal in favor of AM Radio and a digital-focused presentation.

“New York has always been proudly unique in supporting two all-news radio brands, but the news business has gone through significant changes,” said Audacy New York Market President Chris Olivero. “The headwinds facing local journalism nationwide made it essential to strategically reimagine how we deliver the news for the most impact.”

Audacy New York will continue to feature all-news programming on sister station 1010 WINS, which is also available on 92.3 FM, which it added in October 2022.

WCBS debuted its iconic all-news format in 1967 with its famous traffic and weather reporting continuing to be a staple in its branding.

Many observers called the demise of WCBS Newsradio 880 the “end of an era”, with both current and former employees taking to social media to share their memories of the iconic brand.
