SuperTalk 99.7 WTN host Phil Valentine died on August 21, 2021 after a bout with COVID-19. On the third anniversary of his death. many from the station commemorated the date with fond memories of the Nashville radio host.
During Nashville’s Morning News, host Dan Mandis shared that — despite being Valentine’s “boss” as Program Director of the station — continually learned from the longtime host.
“The great thing about radio is you meet incredible people,” Mandis said. “It’s been three years since the death of Phil Valentine, and I think about Phil every single day. I go back, I read the text messages. What few tapes that are left of Phil, I will listen to them on occasion. This is a man who was just incredibly influential, not only in Tennessee, certainly in radio as well, and also, frankly, on my career, because I learned a lot from him when I came to work here. I was — put this in air quotes — his boss, but I would listen to Phil, and I would pick up things along the way, because he was so incredibly good.”
After news anchor Ken Weaver said Valentine and co-host John E. Bozeman were “the best radio duo I have ever heard,” the SuperTalk host said it was Valentine that made the pairing work so well together.
“You could have put anybody with Phil Valentine and he would have made it a winner,” Bozeman said. “I miss him a lot. Actually, this morning, I woke up to a picture of us out on right across from the Capitol for the big income tax fight. And that, to me, will always remain my biggest and best memory, because he got mad. I’ve never seen people come together like that, and he was basically Paul Revere.”
Bozeman took to social media to share photos of Valentine on the third anniversary of his death. He was not alone, as Pamela Furr shared similar sentiments on X.
